For example, cameras (i’m told) are about one quarter the price, ‘put unless you know what you want the array is baffling. Look for shops that display the Red Junk (boat) symbol of the Hong Kong Tourist Association. If you take a chance and shop elsewhere, your guarantee might ‘be as valuable as toilet paper. T'was told that it is a good idea to shop, find what you want and go away. Next morning, be there before the shop opens to do your dealing — bargaining is accepted in a lot of shops. The reason behind the return visit is that the Chinese place a lot of value on luck. If they make the first sale of the day the rest of the day will be prosperous. Be prepared to purchase any item you ‘deal down’’ to the price you offer. There’s no worse insult to a Chinese merchant than to reach a price and have you walk away. If you've got littie time to shop for silk fabrics, assorted table linens and other laces, try Chinese Arts and Crafts. There are various outlets, but the one T liked best is just a block from the Star Ferry, Kowloon side, left side of main Street, just past McDonald’s. It isn’t open at night and doesn’t open until 10 am.
