Readers relieved that Doug Collins is gone Dear Editor: We have just read that the North Shore News had so far received only one letter expressing relief at the departure of Doug Collins. Like many others, we hope a ma- jority, we breathed audible sighs of telief when he left your pages, but failed to make our feeling known in writing. We must break our co:nfortable silence so that the community does not believe Mr, Collins’ views are the prevailing ones. Mr. Collins’ facts may have been irreproachable, but such was not the case with his opinions, which we frequently felt had crossed into the realm of hate- mongering. Name-calling and Promoting intolerance and xenophobia are not solutions for what is already, whethe: Mr. Col- lins and his supporters like it or not, a multi-cultural society. We do not approve of all im- SEVEN SEAS migration policies, and are also concerned about extensive foreign ownership of property. The juve- nile tectic of using demeaning labels to refer to groups and indi- viduals, however, is not going to accomplish anything except to in- crease misunderstanding and ani- mosity on all sides. Certainly Mr. Collins should be free to express his opinions. But the written word carries such authority that when inflammatory views appear to be sanctioned by their weekly inclusion in a news- paper, they become extremely powerful tools for spreading a dangerous attitude. My husband is a fifth-generation Canadian and I am a third genera- tion, voth of British ancestry. We are raising two children, and we welcome the opportunity to ex- pand their understanding of the othe: cultures which co-exist with our own. Diner is ‘our finest’ Dear Editor: : It is sad that North Vancouver’s Own newspaper would print such 2 negative review of our finest res- taurant. The Seven Seas floating restau- rant at the foot of Lonsdale in North Vancouver is prodably the most famous restaurant in the city. It is a piece of floating history whereupon I have spent many ¢n- joyable dinners. Many tourists visiting our city dine here. Many travel miles to taste the fine cuisine the Seven Seas has to offer. There is nothing cafeteria styie about our finest restaurant in North Vancouver. Anybody who has eaten here will agree it has the largest selection of seafood ever offered at one time. 1 am looking forward to my next dinner at the Seven Seas. I know it will be as delicious as my last. Lesley Mesiatt Nort® Vancouver injury Tumer Increased knowledge can only lead to improved relations with other countries in the next genera- tion. In fact, it is becoming more and more apparent that we are liv- ing in what Marshall McLuhan called our global village. We hope our children will grow up to be tolerant of those who are different than they are, even in- ciuding people such as Mr. Collins who cling to outdated «and alienating opinions. The fewer susceptible young minds that are exposed to his views, the better for our whole society. We do not believe the British heritage is in any danger of being lost among other cultures. It is strong enough to hold its own without being coddled like a sickly old man. Our confidence in our heritage enables us to encourage others to be proud of and to cherish their own traditions. This is the direc- tion in which Canada must grow in order to retain its position as a leader of democracy, tolerance and liberty among nations. Promoting distrust will only Serve tG regress our country eco- nomically, politically and _philo- sophically.
