LIFESTYLES N. Shore Family Services offers 29 ‘quality’ courses A RECORD number of North Shore residents will likely be sign- ing up for family-oriented classes offered by the North Shore Family Services Society (NSFSS) this fall, according to Li Boesen, coor- dinator of education and drop-in programs. ‘We're keeping the program lively by responding to suggestions from participants’’ says Boesen. Her approach is definitely work- ing. ; : - The 1988/89 sessions were the most popular ones the NSFSS he: ever offered. There was a 30 per cent increase in registration. That means over 800 people participated in the classes and lectures. Boesen is pleased to explain: “Our name is out in the cominuni- ty and we're recognized as having quaiity.courses.”’ This year one third of the 29 courses are new. ““We used to of- fer about 20 courses, and maybe two or three of those were new,’ adds Boesen. Two of the programs that Boesen would like to highlight are Secrets of Healthy Families and Moving From The Home You Pave Loved. . The latter course is taught by Judy : ‘Ferris, an experienced counsellor who is also experienced at moving.. She and her family Rave changed locations 14 times in 27 years because of the nature of- her husband’s work — Bill Ferris is an Anglican Priest. Judy says people need to give themselves time to grieve the loss of their former home, admit it will be missed, and then go on. ‘‘Peo- ple don’t recognize that a home can be grieved and that it is healthy to do so. Many different emotions accompany a rove, such as sadness, anger and depression. These feelings must be addressed and discussed so the inaividual can handle the change of locations well.’’ Moving From The Home You Have Loved is $9 a person for one Tuesday evening in November. Secrets of Healthy Families will be taught by Lorraine Burns who has been with the NSFSS for three years and has two university-age children, She says: ‘During our 23 years of marriage we have discovered and continue to explore the traits of a healthy famiiy. I feel it would be beneficial to others to be aware there are these traits, thereby minimizing the trial-and- error approach.”’ Enjoying traditions and respec- ting privacy are two of the hints Burns will share with participants in this course. It costs $15 per per- son or $25 a couple for two Mon- day evening sessions. - Other NSFSS programs include Parenting the Nine Month to Two Year Oid, Juxgling Generations, Assertiveness Training, No More: Hot Flashes, and Discussing Adoption With Your Child.
