THE NORTH Shore Health
Department has officially opened a
noise complaint hotline to help it
monitor waterfront railway noise
east of Lonsdale Avenue.

Jointly funded by North Van-
couver City and Canadian Na-
tional Railway, the 988-7413
hotline number was plugged in Ju-
ly 7 and will be open 24 hours per
day for an initial one-year trial

period.

Ald. John Braithwaite, chair-
man of the city’s Noise Control
Committee (NCC), said Wednes-
day he was extremely enthused
about the launch of the service.

The city, he said, has been faced
with the problem of industrial
waterfront noise ‘‘for years, and I
think this is one way of dealing
with it.”’

Railway Action Liaison Committee
(CRALC), which was established
April 30, 1987 after the NCC
agreed to participate in CN Rail’s
suggested formation of a commit-
tee to study the noise problems
arising from the railway’s day-to-
day operation.

The NCC itself was formed by
the city in 1985 to investigate in-
dustrial waterfront noise.

CRALC’s mandate has been to
find solutions to such noises as
railcar impacts, brake and wheel
shrieks, engine idling and revving
and train whistles and bells.
