The arts draw tourists, too

Dear Editor:

As the managing director of
Presentation House Arts Centre, |
feel TP oinust make the following
comments,

1 recently attended a *Destina-
tion North Shore’? function to
promote tourism on the North
Shore. It was sponsored by the
North and West Vancouver
chambers of commerce and was
supported by the mayors of the
three municipalities.

It was a very well-run event, and
everyone connected with it is to be
congratulated. All our natural at-
tractions, such as the local moun-
tains, the Capilano and Lynn
Canyon parks, as well as our
commercial offerings — hotels,
restaurants, shopping malls —
were amply represented and noted.

The glaring omission was in the
area of our arts. As the North
Shore Cultural Policy is endeavar-
ing to communicate: there is a
wealth of talent and arts resources

on the North Shore. And art, in its
various guises, is a major tourist
attraction, often more so than
many commercial enterprises.

Many tourists would not muke
the trip to the North Shore just for
aorestaurant, but we, at) Pres-
entation House, have them coming
over to attend a play or to view
our photographic exhibits. And
while they're at) Presentation
House, they often dine at a restau-
rant, stroll the Lower Lonsdale
areca and Lonsdale Quay, and
possibly do a little shopping.

It has been demonstrated that
for every dollar spent on the arts,
three additional dollars are spent
in the community — and many of
these are tourist dollars.

Presentation House has recently
undergone a major renovation,
and this summer we will be
generating many spinoff tourist
dollars in North Shore restaurants
and shops. It is likcly the Centen-
nial Theatre and the North and
