THOSE APEC ads on how the Brian Baloneyites are plan- ning tc shove French down the throat of English Canada were bang on target. (APEC stands for Alliance for the Preservation of English in Canada.) The ads were also a cail to arms. No words were minced, and that was a joy for the likes of me, who have often wondered how long those sellouts in Ottawa could go on betraying the country to Quebec without the Anglo pea- sants taking to the streets.- ‘SWAKE UP CANADA," they read. “RACISM RUNS RAM- PANT ON PARLIAMENT HILL.” The text stressed how the new bilingualism legislation known as Bill C-72 is a racist document designed to promote the French language, French people and French culture, and that the gov- ernment is engaged in ‘‘the biggest con game ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting pubtic.”’ It’s the truth. I said it before this protest was born. I said it when the first rumblings were heard from the rebel group of Tories who were getting ready to bash their own party on the issue, and now I say it again, How long can we be pushed arcund? How long before we howl that we're not going to take it any more, whether it comes from the Baloney Party, the French-Liberal Party, or the New Dummkopf Party led by Ed Broadbent? There is no hope or health i in any of them. In a discussion with Mary Col- lins of Capilano on a range of issues, including C-72, she told me « she agreed with the legislation “except for a few minor clauses."* To show how good it is, she gave me a Statement signed by 10 Western ministers. The statement was directed at Western Report City says magazine, which had come out against the bill on its front page with the words (in French): "SF YOU CAN'T READ THIS YOU CAN'T WORK FOR THE FED. ERAL GOVERNMENT." This column has already gone into detail on what the legislation portends. (See the North Shore News of Jan. 17 and 20.) Today, it is cnough to point out that C-72, if implemented, would kill most A. ow long can we be pushed around? How long before we howl that we're not going to take if any more, whether it comes from the Baloney Party, the French-Liberal Party, or the New Dummkopf Party led by Ed Broadbent?”’ English-speakcrs’ chances of get- ting into the civil service or becom- ing anything but a dishwasher in the armed forces and crown cor- porations. It's all being done in the name of equality between French and English, and never mind that the French number only 24 per cent of the population. The letter from the 10 ministers was what you might expect from a bunch of twerps who are more in- terested in staying ministers than in railways are too powerful THE EXTRAORDINARY powers of Canadian railways ’ that enable them to ignore municipal bylaws should be cur- tailed, says North Vancouver City Council. In a report. received by council, the city’s Noise Control Commit- tee said the municipalities are powerless to enforce bylaws on the’ railways, which are empowered to act-in ways that ‘could have the effect. of destroying any and all municipal town and regional plans.”? .. ; The committee cited expropria- tion powers that override Official Community Plans as one example. Anti-noise, bylaws are also regular- ly ignored, it said. _ Council .voted unanimously to $end a motion to the Federation of Municipalities conference in June demanding a committee of local and federal. representatives be formed to amend the Railways Act to give municipalities the power to ‘enforce. municipal bylaws “where such. enforcement: is a reasonable interest of the municipality con- cerned.” The motion will be debated at the conference- to be held in Halifax, and if passed, the federa- tion will lobby the federal gov- ernment to ‘establish the commit- _ tee. The intent of the motion, says ‘the committee, is to ensure that the ‘railways ‘‘are sufficiently account- Contributing Writer able to local municipalities,’’ while still protecting the legitimate inter- ests of the railways. “It is recognized that railways are special cases serving the na- tional economy as a whole, and that it would be impractical to make them subject to any and every municipal bylaw. However, the present arrangement, whereby municipalities are obliged to have a major industry operating in their areas, which is unaccountable to local municipalities as the railways at present are, is totally unaccep- table.”’ Council also voted to send a similar motion regarding the Ports Corporations to the FCM con- ference requesting a committee be established to review and amend the legislation to give recognition to the ‘‘legitimate interests’ of the local governments and protect them from disruptive actions from the Ports Corporations. A third motion seeking funding for research into noise abatement techniques also passed and will be ~ forwarded to the FCM conference. standing up for their own kind. (For B.C., they include Pat Carney, Tom Siddon and Frank Oberle.) Their cpistle should be cut in stone and displayed in public places so that posterity may see the kind of stuff the so-called leaders of English Canada were made of in 1988, There's no space to itemize all of their idiocies. But the following will give you the gist: “Nothing in the Act requires people to speak both official tan- guages.” (Of course it doesn't, you fools. All it does is to make clear that anyone who would like a future on the federal scene had better speak French. And they will be better off again if they are Francophone by birth.) ‘Bill C-72 will help promote bi- lingualism...and is therefore an element in this government's commitment to national reconcili- ation,”’ (Are these guys fully com- pos mentis?) “The Bill docs not require all federal government supervisors to be bilingual."’ (Not in so many words. What it docs say, though, is, ‘Public servants must be allowed to work in the language of their choice."’ As Ted Byficld, the Western Report chap, has pointed out, if someone ina rural post office wants to work in French, and the postmaster doesn't savvy French, the postmaster must be replaced by someone who does. What could be clearer? Such deduction is beyond the Morning Wimp, the Evening Wimp, and the National Wimp, all of which say we must love C-72. As in so many issues (immigra- tion, militant feminism, abortion on demand, South Africa, etc.) they are a bunch of nodding donkeys. @ 300 2X ‘#7674 T-tops, mags., Special Effects Kit, white 824,969 J 77838200 SX H/B } #7509-—SENTRA 4 w.d. wagon, 5 spd., light blue "#7410—STANZA, 5 spd., light blue metallic | #7359—STANZA GXE, 5 spd., two tone . $15,869 #7189—STANZA XE HIB, 5 spd, two tone .
