} was deeply disturb~d to read
the comments made by school
trustee Hugh Stark regarding the
child abuse program proposed for
West Vancouver.

Mr. Stark is alleged to have said
that he is not against the program,
but he does not want any academic
programs to be cut as a result of
accommodating the child abuse
prevention program, and he add-
ed, ‘‘We only have so much (time
for teaching cach day. I wonder if
the three Rs will suffer.’’

Let Canadians remember, to
their shame, that, according to the
Badgely Commission, one little girl
in four, and one boy in nine is
sexually abused, most often by a
male family member.

I object intensely to any school
trustee suggesting that the three Rs
are more important than a child
being raped. The safety of
helpless, terrified children comes
before everything. Get your
priorities straight, Mr. Stark.

And other voters out there,
please pressure the WVSB to in-
stitute a program as soon as possi-
ble — and remember this man’s
comments when election time
comes around,

Don't lose Humphreys
through complacenc

Dear Editor:

For many years now we have been ably led by a dedicated Mayor
Derrick Humphreys, who has worked very hard in the interest of all
the people, young and old.

When a problem arose, he would immediately go and look at it, no
matter what time of day, and ensure that the situation was rectified.
in short, actively serving the community and ils people.

There are so many people who assume that the re-election of this
popular mayor is ensured that there is a danger of complacency. The
opposition knows their only hope is to get out their supporters to vote.

The opposition has nothing new to offer and merely promise to
provide the same service we have always been getting. Is it fair to let
the opposition win by complacency? Is it fair to fail to support a
known, dedicated man and let an unknown win?

Let us all get out and vote.
