After 79 years on the North Shore, Walter Makay Draycott leaves a pioneer heritage and community spirit as long as the many years he has lived in his hand built home on Draycott Road, a home he carved out of virgin forest 73 years ago. He was a director of Scouts, Cubs, Explorers, a geology club and a debating club. LOCAL EXPLORER He fought in the Boer War and out-shot everyone in B.C. in 1911 with his .22 ri- fle.:As a military topographer he helped blow up Vimy ridge in France; was the first to thoroughly explore between Horseshoe Bay and Pitt Lake between 1919 and 1928; and discovered six varieties of magic mushrooms but didn't tell a soul.
