Miay celebrates the family

THE MONTH of May for
Many means flowers,
Mother’s Day, and perhaps
one month closer to summer.
For the B.C. Council for the
Family, it means a month of
holding celebrations, raising

awareness, and promoting
the value of family life
throughout British Colum-
bia: May has once again been
declared Family Month by
the Government of British
Columbia.

This year’s theme is ‘‘The
Family — Our Stength.”’ Ina
time of great worry and stress
in our society, with high
unemployment, worry over
nuclear arms build-up, and
numerous other difficulties,

Cape Horn was located as
being a town in ‘South
America’, ‘off coast of
North Africa’, ‘‘tip of South
America’’, *‘a point — don’t
know where’’ again with two
rights, ‘‘South Africa’’.

The Antipodes got short
rations. Hobart was located
as being either in Australia or
New Zealand with four out
of the seven having no idea at
all of its location, which is
the captial of the island of

Tasmania, so ‘‘Australia’’
was correct.
If Hobart was less than

well-known, Carpentaria was
almost a wipe-out. ‘‘Don’t
know’’, ‘‘never heard of 1""

know’’, with just one correct
answer, a sea, neat Australia

city in Switzerland, but if

Niger was ‘‘never heard
of’, ‘‘city in Nigeria’', ‘‘a
river, don’t know where’’
but three knew it for a river
in Africa, and yet another
thought it another name for
Nigeria.

Mauno Loa which I was
sure everyone would know
was a bit of a surprise. It got .
“‘don’t know’’, ‘*Hawaii’’,
**town in Hawaii’’, with only
three knowing it was a
volcano in Hawaii.

The one that was the real
eye-opener on the list was
Welland. ‘‘Don’t know’’
‘‘canal between North and
South America’’, ‘‘canal in
England’’, ‘“‘city in New

Zealand”’ with only one per-
son knowing it was the name -
of both a canal and a city in

Goose Bay with one excep-
tion was placed in Canada,
with most people locating it
properly in Labrador, the ex-
ception was on the right track
though, placing it just a little
further north, in Greenland.

In the not too. distant
future an article similar to
this might very well include
the names: Mare Imbrium,
Doerfel Mountain, Moscow
Sea, Deimos, Rhobus, Um-
briel, Miranda, Tirton, Tro-
jan, Proxima Centauri,
Sirius, and Canopus, and the
title: Where in Space!

In the meantime, what do
we know about this, our own
small planet? Will the
modern trend to the pursuit
of trivia help to remedy the
situation? Or does it need a
remedy? Does it matter?
There are a lot of questions.

is good and positive in our
world. What's right with
families is no exception.

During May, the B.C.
Council for the Family,
through its members, makes
a special effort to raise
awareness of the value of
family life. It is the Council's
belief that solid family life
provides strength not only
for individual family
members, but for
neighborhoods, communities
and the whole society as well.

rely On a strong institution,
families seem to be first to fill
