Miay celebrates the family THE MONTH of May for Many means flowers, Mother’s Day, and perhaps one month closer to summer. For the B.C. Council for the Family, it means a month of holding celebrations, raising awareness, and promoting the value of family life throughout British Colum- bia: May has once again been declared Family Month by the Government of British Columbia. This year’s theme is ‘‘The Family — Our Stength.”’ Ina time of great worry and stress in our society, with high unemployment, worry over nuclear arms build-up, and numerous other difficulties, What in the world? From page C1 Without exception § they knew that Albania was in Europe, and with one excep-_ tion, that it was a country. The exception didn’t know what it was. It was unanimous that Bahamas is a_ group of iskands, and variously placed ‘twest of South America’’ ‘‘off New Zealand’’, ‘‘in the Caribbean’’, ‘‘in the south seas’’, ‘‘British West In- dies’’, and two had _ the answer | was aiming for, ‘‘in the Attantic’’, although British West Indies is certain- ly correct. Albuquerque was describ- ed as ‘‘city in the U.S.A.,’ *‘town in Mexico’’, ‘‘town in B.C.’’ and a city in New Mexico, U.S.A. which of course it 1s. Cape Horn was located as being a town in ‘South America’, ‘off coast of North Africa’, ‘‘tip of South America’’, *‘a point — don’t know where’’ again with two rights, ‘‘South Africa’’. The Antipodes got short rations. Hobart was located as being either in Australia or New Zealand with four out of the seven having no idea at all of its location, which is the captial of the island of Tasmania, so ‘‘Australia’’ was correct. If Hobart was less than well-known, Carpentaria was almost a wipe-out. ‘‘Don’t know’’, ‘‘never heard of 1"" “up inp Heaven for all 1 know’’, with just one correct answer, a sea, neat Australia What I'd been hoping for was “gulf off morth-coast of Australia’’ The Black Sea got treatment bither “burope™’ ov Russia’) was chosen by everyone which was close to the correct answer Europe and Asia Lucerne was described as “a province ob Prance™ oan one the better between bat fen ISTANCE, You can't get INto swimming if you can't get into your swimsuit, most part it was correctly identified as being a town or city in Switzerland, but if **lake in Switzerland’’ had - been chosen it would have been correct. Niger was ‘‘never heard of’, ‘‘city in Nigeria’', ‘‘a river, don’t know where’’ but three knew it for a river in Africa, and yet another thought it another name for Nigeria. Mauno Loa which I was sure everyone would know was a bit of a surprise. It got . “‘don’t know’’, ‘*Hawaii’’, **town in Hawaii’’, with only three knowing it was a volcano in Hawaii. The one that was the real eye-opener on the list was Welland. ‘‘Don’t know’’ ‘‘canal between North and South America’’, ‘‘canal in England’’, ‘“‘city in New Zealand”’ with only one per- son knowing it was the name - of both a canal and a city in Modern styling for men & women by European trained Stylists Ontario. Goose Bay with one excep- tion was placed in Canada, with most people locating it properly in Labrador, the ex- ception was on the right track though, placing it just a little further north, in Greenland. In the not too. distant future an article similar to this might very well include the names: Mare Imbrium, Doerfel Mountain, Moscow Sea, Deimos, Rhobus, Um- briel, Miranda, Tirton, Tro- jan, Proxima Centauri, Sirius, and Canopus, and the title: Where in Space! In the meantime, what do we know about this, our own small planet? Will the modern trend to the pursuit of trivia help to remedy the situation? Or does it need a remedy? Does it matter? There are a lot of questions. May Sinclair is a North Vancouver housewife and Jreelance writer. Call for appointment 984-9400 Mon-Thurs 9-6, Fri 9-8. What's right with families is no exception. During May, the B.C. Council for the Family, through its members, makes a special effort to raise awareness of the value of family life. It is the Council's belief that solid family life provides strength not only for individual family members, but for neighborhoods, communities and the whole society as well. Carol Matusicky, Ex- ecutive Director of the B.C. C3 - Sunday, May 6, 1984 - North Shore News Council for the Family says, ‘*It is time to view the family, in whatever form, as a shaper of society rather than its vic- tum. The family, as a major resource in itself, is the con- ext in which = individuals grow, develop, and change. With this perspective comes the awareness of the impor- tance of looking at family strengths and of supporting and encouraging those strengths.”’ The B.C. Council for the Family links a wide variety of community and_ religious organizations with a common interest in encouraging fami- ly related activities. As well, wu provides a means for growth to families and organizations through educa- tional materials and network- ing family resources in com- munities all over the province. In a time when we need to rely On a strong institution, families seem to be first to fill the bill, May, as Family Month, can be that time to re-discover and focus on the strengths of our own families.
