A reputable contractor will be happy to provide them. e Ask your neighbours if they recently insulated. If so, ask about their con- tractor. * Get more than one quote on a job, and be sure to describe the job’s require- ments exactly the same way to each bidder. Otherwise, you'll have a hard time realistically comparing the merits of each proposal. * Specify your insulation needs in “R-values,” ofr thermal efficiency rating, not inches, since 10 in. of one manufacturer's product may not have the same R- value as 10 in. of another manufacturer's product. A reputable contractor should provide you with a written proposal that clearly states the R-valuc of the insulation to be installed and the entire cost of the work to be _ performed. * Be sure the contractor you hire is fully insured. Most contractors carry ample liability insurance and will giadly show you proof of coverage. ¢ Make sure the contractor issues you a_ certificate identifying the insulation manufacturer's mame and stating the R-value of the material installed. This can become a particularly useful document when you are ready to sell your home. Make sure you get a written guarantee against faulty workmanship. Galbraith advises that in addition to asking for a written proposal clearly stating the R-value to be installed, “be sure the in- sulation is installed ac- cording to manufacturer's specifications.” ‘ ‘This, he says, involves calculating the. recom- mended amount of coverage per square foot of space to ‘be insulated, as indicated on the insulation package, and then counting the number of bags of material, making sure there’s c¢nough to achieve proper coverage.
