The Western Canadian Opera Society’s “Opera Club,” now entering its 7th year, has almost 650 active members. It is the brainchild of Alan Aberbach, a charter member of the Department of History at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Aberbach’s infectious enthusiasm, chari- smatic teaching style and great depth and breadth of knowledge about opera have all combined to make the Opera Club one of the most successful organizations in the city. The Opera Club is didi- cated to encouraging those who know nothing about opera to “give it a try” and also to help those who have already been bitten by the Opera bug to learn a | ttle more about their love. “he Club is primarily an educa- tional group and is not associated with the perform- ing company, the Vancouver Opera Association, nor with its fund-raising arm, the Opera Guild. Each month, almost 300 people turn out to hear knowledgeable hosts discuss, with musical illustrations, a wide variety of operatic topics. From time to time the parent “Western Canadian Opera Society” mounts special series of lectures on such topics as “An Introduction to Opera,” “The Metropolitan Opera Season” or “The Operas of Richard Wagner.” These lectures are given in association with an educa- Semor Citizens $4 00 Otiscournt tional institution, such as Simon Fraser University or Vancouver Community College, and _ frequently these may be taken for credit. Other activities reinforce this generally educational theme. The Club operates a lending library of complete operas on cassette, where members may study (or just plain enjoy) new operas at home. A monthly newsletter “Ensemble” keeps members up to date with develop- ments in the world of opera and announces the = up- coming program for the Club. The annual scholarship program, organized by Mezzo Soprano Audrey Glass, has done much to assist up-and-coming local singers. Tours to each per- formance of the Seattle Opera are provided and members have also visited the Bayreuth festival in Germany and a tour is planned to the Santa Fe festival in 1981. Before each production by the Vancouver Opera, a special “Preview Intro- duction” program is provided for the general public at the Robson Square Media Centre. This year, the success story of increasing interest in the Club reaches a new chapter: Demand for these activities has grown so large that at several of last year's meetings, the 300 seat audi- torlum at Vancouver Com- munity College's Langara Campus was filled to over- flowing. The Opera Club has been forced to duplicate each of its monthly lecture programs this year.
