Alderman Peter Powell told District council Monday because of “strict limitations imposed last year by the province” the District ran up a surplus of $1.4 million. Other major increases include a 26 per cent hike in the library system from $574,620 to $724,400. Powell attributed the steadiness of property taxes to the municipal staff. General government expense was reduced by $145,509, public works department operated with $72,207 less than it was budgeted for and parks and public works projects were completed at $46,748 under budget, he said in a prepared brief. “It is an outstanding record and one on which on Pub to be watched FROM PAGE At1 10 to 20 year setback on the North Shore if the Queens Cross hours were extended. English Pubs also close by 11 p.m. at the latest. The council also passed a motion introduced by Mayor Don Bell that North Van- couver RCMP patrol the pub area at closing time and report back to council. Throw Summer behalf of this council, I take pleasure in commending our staff at all levels,” he said. Alderman Ernie Crist said the only change he would | have liked to make to the budget would be to increase the amount of grants. Powell said the council could have reduced the public’s taxes by a few. dollars this year but opted instead to keep a $225,000 surplus to increase the district’s emergency fund to “No business can run efficiently without a reserve, and we will now have a reserve of approximately four per cent to fall back upon when something hits which we cannot foresec,” he said. “WE SELL’ NEWS photos. if you want to order a photo that appeared in the NEWS, call Andrea Barratt. 8a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday only 985-2131 sunday news north shore news A Curve!
