EMPLOYMENT Part-time work keeps growing PART-TIME work is the fastest growing form of employment in the metropolitan area and is a ma- jor element in under-employment, according to a report produced by the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s (GYRD) Development Services Department. The report says part-time work now represents about 20 per cent of all employment compared to about 14 per cent five years ago. Part-time work is concentrated in the service and trade industries and has an over-representation of women and young workers. Typical of service and trade in- dustry jobs are sales clerks and restaurant services. Under-employment is shown by the number of part-time workers who would rather have a full-time job. Prior to the start of the general economic downturn about five years ago only 14 per cent of part-time workers wanted full-time jobs. Today that figure is closer to 35 CANADA FAVILION is faun- ching an innovative program to assist its employees in finding new employment after Expo 86. A catalogue of human resources has been prepared by the pavilion’s personnel division and is being cir- culated to more than 5,500 private and —-tvlic companies in the Lower Maiailend area. The catalogue consists of mini- resumes which sketch individual career objectives, professional qualifications, job-related training and experience and educational achievements. The program involves manage- ment, hosting and visitor services personnel, technical and ad- ministrative support staff. More than half of the 625 pavil- ion empioyees are participating in the placement program. Deputy Commissioner General John Powles, a veteran of six other world expositions and Canada's representative to the Bureau of In- ternational Expositions, said the program is a first. “The idea has been talked about before, but this is the first time I’ve seen it implemented,’* Powles said. “Our people have demou strated an exceptional level of perfor- mance in the pressure filled en- vironment of a world exposition. | recommend that potential employers take a close look at their skills and qualifications.” Employers wishing more infor- mation on the placement program should contact the Canada Pavil- ion Personnel Division at 666- 2000.
