IT was Jack Nicklaus
who said that if a
golfer is to be remem-
bered he must win
The Open at St
Andrews.

Many wonder why this
should ‘be so, for the Old
course is by no means the
toughest course in the world.

Probably the most impor-
rant reason is the legend and
the mystic that pervades the
links and have carned St.
Andrews the tithe “The
Home of Golf”,

There is also the presence
of the R&A fuoking majesti-
cally over the course like a
golfing Big Brother and

Until 1870, the Open
Championship had been
played exclusively at
Prestwick

Thereafter, it was playe
over three courses,
Prestwick, St. Andrews and
Musselburgh, the courses of
the three clubs which con-
tributed to the purchase of
the new Open
Championzhip trophy. St.
Andrews hosted its st
Open in 1873.

The first man to win the
Open at St. Andrews was
Tom Kidd, with a 36-hole
aggregate of 179 against
what was then a record entry
of 26.

More
include Jack Nicklaus, three
times, twice at St. Andrews
in 1970 and 1978.

His first win in 1970 was
memorable for Doug
Sander’s disastrous mistake
on the last green of the
fourth and final round.

Putting short forced a tie
with Nicklaus, which Jack
won with a mighty drive,
leading to a birdie three.

Sanders matched _ his
birdie, but could not match
his score, losing by 73 to 72.

The 1990 Open at St
Andrews brought the trophy
back to England.

This was the year for Nick
Faldo, who won the compe-
tition with an impressive
