CONGRATULATIONS to North Vancouver City mayor Barbara Sharp for actively beginning to pro- mote the reintroduction of streetcar service on Lonsdale. After 40 years of service, streetcars clanged their way into North Vancouver's history on April 23, 1947, Buses were seen as an improvement at the time. Streetcar No. 153 was eventually rediscovered in the Fraser Valley serving duty as a chicken coop and restored through the efforts of Bob Booth, Carl Andersen and Stephen Ley. The city has already spent over $130,000 on the project and Booth figures another $100,000 is needed to get No. 153 rolling. But rolling where? Should it sit as a stationary exhibit at the foot of Lonsdale, run east-west on a limited track to link the Quay to some of the projects slated for the Versatile lands to the east, or climb the hill at least as far as central Lonsdale. The last choice might provide the most benefit in terms of tourism dollars but would cost the most to implement. Is there a tax implication or could track and operating costs be found through spon- sorship? Watch for the city to host open houses to discuss the future of Lonsdale and get involved in the future look of North Vancouver. Oh yes, sure. Lonsdale is a long street with lots to see and the view from the cop is beautiful in places. Stanley Park does it (with gas-pow- ered replicas). If the com- munity really wants it, the benefits should outweigh the cost factor. Certainly. Most people who come across never go beyond the Quay. They would have to do something to simarten up the central area. It feels barren and cold up there.
