A solid serving of British cuisine From page 22 Mersey beat and some pass- ably interesting British pub fare. Italso generates a warmth of Celtic social spirit so often missing in modern- day Canadian neighborhood pubs. Interior decor is a pas- tiche of British pub mirrors and assorted Great British paraphernalia crossed with "60s Cavern club fixtures. The walk of fame leading _ to The Brit’s washrooms is wallpapered in promo shots of rock and pop stars from your British Invasion closet of memories (Leo Sayer, Gerry Marsden et al) set against a black background and illuminated with black light. Previous visits to the kitchen facilities at the 1552 Lonsdale locale have been far from inspiring. Kitchen quarters are cramped, and because of the subterranean location and limited ventilation, open flame and deep fryers are not allowed. The kitchen must rely primarily on convection cookery. It’s a baking and boiling affair all the way. But The Brit’s fare is not bad at all. It’s made on the premis- es. Prep work is done in the early part of the week when The Brit is closed to the public, then baked during opening hours. A sampled Lancashire Hot Pot featured a hefty serving of the traditional British dish, which is basical- ly a thick beef stew topped with slices of potato. Nor haute cuisine, mates, but this is not the place for such ponccy stuff anyway. Ale accompaniment is what we's after. The Brit’s version of the Lancashire included a full- flavored stew thick with NORTH SHORE FooR NEWS north shore SU713 million is spent annually on food in restaurants on the Norch Shore.
