Ms. Tremblay did not explain what she was

I the questionnaire, | was on the phone to my

f cesaercher to tind out how much Ms. Tremblay
had received.

iT WAS $41,100

At first the SSHRC refused to release the
information | had requested, but, under threat
of an Access to Information request, | was
provided with a description of the project,
entirely in French. According to an SSHRC

f represwniative, the material had not been
translated into English. | was tempted to kick up

a fuss, but decided that it was easier just to -

asrange for translation.

Later that day, with an English version of the
text in front ot me, | discovered that Ms.
Tremblay had received a grant of $41,100 fora
three year project beginning in the .1993/94
budget year. The purpose of the research was

| listed as “part of a broader research
initiative by the author on women's
insolvement in politics”, focusing on “the
under-representation of women in
politics” ... “with a view to verifying the
hypothesis of hostility on the part of

} local establishments to women
candidates”. These research intentions we .

! clearly quite different to those contained in t.er
letter to parliamentarians, so 1 decided it was

‘4 time to take a look at the questions in the

| survey.

voters to decide whether they want
more women in The House . of
Commons, not me. I cannot support
compulsory quotas based on gender, or
ethnic background.

MONEY WELL SPENT?

This $41,100 “research project” is a major §

waste of your tax dollars because many other

. MPs feel as | do and have not bothered to

respond to the survey. We are empaoyees of the

taxpayers, and YOU are the people who make [

the employment decisions at election time,

ensuring that Ms. Tremblay's research results

will be irrelevant and meaningless. The funds
would have been better spent on deficit
eduction, salmon enhancement, or transfers in
support of health care. If you agrea, please

that he puta stop to handouts of this type by .
