Their interiors seem to arouse
feelings of passion — passionate
love in some, and passionate
abhorrence in others. A look at
today’s auction houses, antique
stores and interior design maga-
zines attests to the love und devo-
tion spent on recreating the lacy
opulence of the Victorian style.

Many respected art historians,
on the other fiand, have utter dis-
dain for anything produced during
the long reign of Queen Victoria.

the reader wondering what
could have been the cause of

creativity died with the designers

Century creative spirits were oth-
erwise occupied.

They were busy
inventing new
machines and new
technology. They
were busy travel-
ling to new
colonies and
returning with
exotic merchandise.

In England. like in
North America,
energies were
focused on laying
the foundations of
industrial fortunes.
Wealth spread; it
shifted from the
aristocratic barons
who had previously
supported the arts
to the barons of
industry,

This shift created demand for
houses and furnishings that. were
as rich and sumptuous as those of
the old aristocracy, and explains
