Ferry terminals soon to be compieted WORK BEGUN in the fall of 1993 is now nearing completion at two of B.C. Ferries’ major terminals. In November, construction cost- ‘ing $4.5 million began on the sec- ‘ond phase of the Swartz Bay termi- 7 nal-through the Government’ s BC “20 initiative. The main focus of the project is a new three-storey foot passenger ‘facility that will :provide as _“arrivals/departures” area closer to “the vessels, additional ticket . booths, an expanded passenger waiting room with upgraded pas- senger services, an improved pre- board lounge for berth 1 and a new .preboard lounge for berths 2,3,4 and 5. Both lounges will be connected _ by a suspended walkway. The entire facility will be wheelchair accessible, President and CEO, Michael Martin, said that there has been inconvenience for foot passengers ' .during construction, but the new facility, which should be completed in June in time for the busy sum- mer season, will provide greatly improved service. At Horseshoe Bay terminal, a three-part project to improve pedestrian safety is also nearing completion. In September of 1993, work began on the $1,205,100 project. An overhead walkway has been constructed from the upper level “Langdale” holding deck to the administration building. This allows waiting vehicle customers to leave the terminal, go into Horseshoe Bay, and return without crossing any traffic lanes. A new waiting area and foot passenger ramps have been built at the upper ramp level, to allow foot passengers direct access to the upper vehicle decks of the ferries in berths 2 and 3. A new two-level control tower provides enhanced visibility for Tower Operators. All work has now been com- pleted, except for installation of an elevator to provide wheelchair accessibility to the upper deck. This should be in place by September. In addition, some work is being done on marine equipment at berths | and 2 at a cost of approxi- mately $1.5 million. It should be completed later this month. yan 1300 CC OVERHEAD CAM ENGINE (29% MORE HORSEPOWER). 5 SPEED (OR ADD AVAILABLE AUTOMATIC) TRANSMISSION | FULL INSTRUMENTATION, INCLUDING TACHOMET ER, 413” PERFORMANCE TIRES ON STEEL WHEELS, » ALL NEW.
