Our |. burr under their saddie is the MPs pension plant a : . Reform MPs’ want the Government to allow us to opt out of _the gold plated, taxpayer funded, inflation indexed plan as soon as pos- sible. . : SOME BACKGROUND Thanks to a lot of publicity by the National Citizens’ Coalition over the years the shocking detaifs about the MPs’ pension plan have become widely known. MPs who have served just 6 years can retire on a pension tor life. Kim Campbell just missed out with anly 5 years under her belt but Mary Collins, for exampte, has “retired” on almost $40,000 per year. If she lives to age 75 she will collect around $1.6 million although she probably con- tributed less than $90,000 to the plan during her time in office. Reform ran on a platform of elimi- nation of perks, inctuding bringing the pension plan into line with these in the private sector. We have already achieved our target regarding perks although the Liberal Government is trying to take the credit. (Shoeshine services, choap haircuts, picture framing, free gymnasium and a list of other perks are now history). Every Reform MP wants out of the present pension plan and | personally refused to sign the form authorizing deduc- tions from my pay. However, 11% of my pay is still being deducted against my will. QUESTION TIME We began hitting the Government with questions about pensions in the first week of the new Pasliament. Since then we have increased the fraquency of questioning and the “Prime Minister is now showing'a great dea! of agitation and annoyance over the issue, He has pleaded with us to drop the questions. Here is part _ of a question to the Prime Minister (Hansard March 9/94) after he had once again stated that even the worst hockey players.are paid more than the best MPs. . Elwin Hermanson, Reform MP: "The best players the league has ever seen receive pensions less than half that received by. the worst MPs, including many NOP and Tory mem- bers who were removed from the last Parliament. When will the Prime Minister stop high-sticking Canadian taxpayers and change the MP pen- sion plan?” Prime Minister Chretien: “Mr. Speaker, ! think this member thinks . he is not worth the pay we are giving him.” Hermanson: “Mr. Speaker, | can- not understand why the Prime Minister cannot distinguish between pensions and salaries. ...The worst MPs get a gold plated pension plan with no threat of being recalled. Prime Ministar: “..t can under- stand the member knows he will not be re-elected so he will never have 2 pension. However, perhaps those who have served in Parliament a long time, with the type of salary they received and being 51 and going into the market should have a pension...” itis very clear to us that the Liberal Government does not want us to opt out because it is likely the entire plan would then collapse. The sooner the better | say!
