BC Hydro would appreciate this
opportunity ta provide your
readers with information about
our vegetation management pro-
gram. Perhaps this wilt help to
balance the comments contained
in a letter to the Editor in the Jan.
29 issue of your newspaper.

BC Hydro'’s vegetation
management activities are an im-
portant means of minimizing in-
terruptions to electrical service.

Falling trees and branches are a
major cause of power outages
around the province. In recent
years, BC Hydro has been work-
ing with citizens and municipal
officials in a coordinated ap-
proach to the problem. ~

Such preventative action has
contributed significantly to a
reduction in the nuraber of inter-
tuptions to ¢lectrical services in
your newspaper's readership area,

’ There is still plenty more to be

done; however, BC Hydro is pur-
suing its tree pruning efforts in
accordance with approved
aboricultural standards, using the
professional services of know-
ledgeable contractors under the
supervision of qualified BC Hydro
personnel,

AS a matter of practice,
“Notice of tree pruning’ cards
are distributed well in advance by
Canada Post to all residents in a
neighborhood where tree pruning
is planned.

Several telephone numbers are
provided to facilitate preliminary
contact between the homeowner
and our contractor so any ques-

tions can be addressed prior to the
work being performed.

A check with others living in’

the immediate areca of Janet
Crowter confirmed they had
received the appropriate notifica-
tion cards.

An inspection of the work per-
formed in this instance determined
that it was done properly;
regrowth was removed and the
correct clearance between the
balance of the growth and the ex-
isting power line was established.

Willow trees are well-known for
their ability to grow quickly and
this consideration was taken into
account at the time.

Public and employee safety is
another major motivation for en-
suring power fines are kept free of
vegetation,

BC Hydro recognizes the dif-
ficulty in balancing safety con-
cerns along with the esthetic value
of trees and environmental con-
siderations against a requirement
to provide a continuous supply of
electricity, 40 meet customers’
needs.

Fortunately, the public has also
become more aware of this balan-
cing act.

Several publications are uvail-
able from BC Hydro offices to
assist customers in planning their
tree requirements along power
fines. Local BC Hydro offices
welcome requests for assistance
and we invite the North Shore
News to contact us for advice on
vegetation management.
