Janice Harris of the District of North Vancouver criticized the proposed Northlands municipal golf course in the tocal newspapers. Although 1 am flattered that she considers me one of the local elite I must take issue with her letter. She criticizes borrowing part of the money for the construction of the course from the Heritage Fund. This fund was set up with surplus funds from tand sales and may only be used for capital pro- jects that can repay the fund at commercial interest rates. The golf course can and will pay the money back into the fund, The consultant’s financial report estimates a net profit of $1.7 mil- lion annually, far more than enough to pay back the construc- tion cost. Coun. Harris prefers a referen- dum, with all the associated cosis, so that the district can borzow the money. The cost of the golf course is Degradation of two orders Dear Editor: With regard to the article, “AIDS claims CBC diarist Dr. Peter,”’ in your Nov. 18 issue, I think that for this man, who performed homosexual coitus once too often, to be nominated for the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada is not only a gross degradation of these two Orders, but also a vross insult to the past recipients of these heretofore prestigious Orders. if he had contracted syphilis and subsequently died as a result, would he then have been considered for any posthumous decorations, regardless of how bravely he had conducted himself or what **messages’’ he had ieft? I think not — nor should he have been. Dr. Peter Jepson-Young was a physician and as such had the advantage over most in the realization of the risks inherent with a homosexual lifestyle. In my estimation, ‘'Dr. Peter’’ did nothing more than commit delayed suicide and should not be enshrined as any kind of a hero. John Christensen Vancouver Houses negate Delbrook design Dear Editor: {t appears that the planning department of the District of North Vancouver has forgotten the design intent of the Delbrook area, that residents should have a view of the harbor whilst looking over the roofs of their neighbors down the siope. Large and high houses negate this intent as Harry Mayor has found to his cost. Who is running the planning department, the municipality or developers? I suggest that Mayor Murray Dykeman should grip the planning department and make it function to the satisfaction of most resi- dents. A few thousand letters would tell him what we want. Meanwhile he can ponder this: A friend of mine has suggested that replacement houses should not exceed the height of the origi- nal and it should apply in all areas. S.G. Gancouver 2 estimated between $6 and SIL mil- fion in the studies done for the district, not $14 million as claimed by Coun. Harris. The arguments she makes against the golf course based on forgone land sales can be used against community parks and al! our recreation facilities. The golf course takes more land than other sports, but in return provides a huge profit for the municipality. The exact amount of forgone land sales is impossible to determine because it depends how much housing you want to put onto the land. East Seymour will eventually be a highly developed area and the golf course will provide an in- valuable greenbelt area, recreation for 10,000 people every year, and income to the municipality for our children and their children. Let’s get on with it.
