Tour UBC’s spectacular gardens this summer

SUMMER IS a great time
to visit the University of
British Columbia.

The campus is in full, colorful
bloom and the pace is a little
slower. The views up Howe Sound
are spectacular and the garden-
like peacefulness is a comfortable
distance from the hustle and bus-
tle of downtown Vancouver.

You can choose from a variety
of guided walking tours; scan the
Stars through the observatory’s
world-class telescope; wander
through galleries and museums:
swim in the Olympic-sized out-
door pool; make your dining
selection from the menus of sev-
eral campus eating spots; and just
generally have fun.

While you're there, youl] want
to check out the 80-million-
year-old Lambeosaurus dinasaur
skeleton at the M.Y. Williams
Geological Museum, or just enjoy
the serene splendor of the Koerner
Ceramics Gallery in the Museum
of Anthropology (MOA).

Kids will enjoy a guided tour
through the dairy barn located at
the south end of Wesbrook Mall,
where they'll get close-up looks at
cows and calves. Afternoon tours
include an opportunity to watch
cows being milked.

UBC’s spectacular gardens ace
always a treat. The rose garden,
which overlooks the entrance to
English Bay and the snow-capped
mountains of the coastal range,
exhibits more than 300 types of

roses throughout the summer.

Established in 1916, the UBC
Botanical Garden is the oldest
botanical garden in Canada.
You're invited to stroll through
the one-hectare hillside alpine
garden, and to step back in time
to the physick garden and view a
16th céntury herb garden. Tours
are designed to introduce guests to
these and other areas.

The university boasts a variety
of unique shops on campus. At
MOA, the Anthropology Shop of-
fers some of the finest West Coast
works of ast, as well as examples
of ethnic art from around the
world.

The Collector Shop at the Geo-
logical Museum has the finest
assortment of specimens available
in B.C.

And you can browse through an
amazing selection of books,
clothing and souvenirs at the UBC

You might also enjoy a music
concert, take in summer stock
theatre productions, or if you're
more into the outdoors, you can
hike or bike through the adjacent
trails of Pacific Spirit Regional
Park oz along the nearby beaches.

UBC graduates are invited to
celebrate the Alumni Association’s
75th anniversary at a dinner and
dance to be held at the University
Golf Club on May 22.

For newcomers to UBC, the
campus tour program helps you
put it all together. From May
through August, friendly student

guides will lead you on walking
tours, highlighting the outstanding
features of this province’s oldest
and biggest university. Specialized
tours are also available for
seniors, children, ESL and other
groups. For greater convenience,
much of the campus is wheelchair
accessible,
