MAILBOX Wednesday, January 8, 1992 - North Shore News - 7 Senseless tragedy deserves commemoration Dear Editor: We found the editorial ‘‘Empty billboards’? of Dec. 18, concern- ing the CBC’s decision to forbid their air staff from wearing white ribbons to commemorate the Montreal massacre, poorly writ- ten, illogical and offensive in its conclusions. _ The writer proclaimed that the Suggested wearing of white rib- bons as a symbol of mourning and remembrance for the victims of Lepine’s' mad violence some- how ‘“‘robbed men of their freedom to express their feelings. in a way appropriate to them.”* CBC’s decision to deny their air - staff exactly this freedom is doubtless a more appropriate target to attract this kind of con- demnation, but. the writer never- theléss fully endorses it. . ' CBC’s decision, it was argued, is reflective of its policy of impar- tiality.. Surely this policy is | Thank you Dear Editor: - On Saturday, Novver 30, ' over 300 residents representing _ community -groups from throughout: the Lower Mairiand participated ‘in the Greater Van- couver Regional District’s Green Zone. It was a very. successful beginning to a very important ini- tiative. . I want to thank you and your co-workers with the Nerth Shore News for running the advertise- designed to avoid the expression of purely political opinions. To characterize the remembrance of the senseless tragedy in Montreal as such an opinion is to deny that the phenomenon of violence towards women transcends mere political’ categories, and strikes right at the core of. human sen- sibilities common to us all. Finally, the argument was made that, lacking any day or symbol to cominemorate innumerable ‘‘kill- ings throughout the world that merit as much of our sorrow,” we should refrain .from the reccgni- tion of this particular onc. The weakness of such reasoning is obvious; extrapolating from it, we could argue equally effectively that Remembrance Day should be abandoned in light of the myriad of wars past and present that we fail to remember. We doubt whether the writer would be so ’ quick to advocate that position. for support ment letting your community knew about the cable broadcast on March 20 on Creating Greater Vancouver's Green Zone, Your involvement encourages focal readers to be informed and involved in the vitat long-range decisions concerning green space in our communities. . On that day, 14 innocent women lost their lives to a deranged man’s misogynist aggression. Their murder stands as a symbol of the very real violence against women found in our society. It was an event that forced the Canadian public to face the truth of one of our deepest shames, and (hopefuliy) examine the attitudes that breed such violence. Remembrance of such an event is, we feel, entirely appropriate for about what it revealed, and a TSL’s ANNUAL those who are concerned: white ribbon is only the smailest token of that concern. If the CBC’s policy precludes the display of such a simple token, perhaps it requires re-examination.
