Becker News Reporter The annual gathering brings together natives from mest of the more than 190 B.C. native bands, and is a collective effort by native youth and elders to rekindle and restore the traditional leadership role of aboriginal! elders. Said Squamish band member Rena Purjue, coordinator of the 1990 Elders Gathering, ‘What they are trying to do is revive a tradition. At one time they weren't all living on reservations. They had their own little ter- ritories, living with their families. And the heads of the families were the elders. “When they were forced upon the reservations, the Indian agents and the church manipulated around and kicked those chiefs out, And as time went on the el- ders were totally disregarded because of all the degradation that Yollowed on the reserve.”* Purjue charged that the chief and council system, a ‘‘micro- white system’? imposed by the government, has contributed to nepotism and oppression on reserves. “There’s not much to do,’’ she said, ‘‘and about the only ones who are employed are the band office workers. Most people live way below the poverty line, and you've got some people who are trying to live on about $180 per month under horrible conditions.
