é ate 40 ~ Sundsy, Decentber 3, 1989 - North Shore News Experience the Brigadoon lifestyle in restored castie GOING TO Scotland? A reader has mailed me a brochure, a photograph and a let- ter describing one of their recent discoveries --- Dunderave Castle on the shores of Loch Fyne near In- verary. The castle is the ancient seat of Clan Macnaughton and now, completely restored (and discreetly modernized) is open for guests. The readers were treated to a tour arranged by the owner, Sir Barry Weir. Sir Barry was halfway up the side of the castle on a scaf- fold when they arrived, doing some on-site supervision of the finishing touches. The pictures in the brochure are impressive — I think I'd have a fine night’s sleep in the four-poster in the “Flower Room” and dining in the Red Banner Hall wouldn't spoil my appetite one bit. The castle is about an hour's scenic drive from Glasgow — I'll vouch for the scenery as Brian and I visited the area a couple of years ago and it’s certainly worth a return visit. The castle Las seven suites for guests and if you want to stage a mini-convention you are invited to rent all seven. Unforiunately I don’t have a rate sheet, but my guess is that it’s apt to be pricey. Mind you, I'd sooner pay top doilar in a Scot’s Castle than at the Ritz in some big city. And, yes, I do have a hefty dose of the Brigadoon syndrome. Half my ancestors were McKays and MacDermots and no doubt some of them chased around the coun- tryside raising hell and freezing thei: knees. My vote for the most marvellous outfit a man can wear is a kilt, especially seamed with the ruffled shirt and velvet jacket. Did I ever tell you about the time I tried to get Brian into one? Probably net — it didn’t work! My information comes from a reader who enclosed a copy of the Bangkok Post, Oct. 6, 1989. It contains a letter from a British tourist who was robbed and left penniless. It’s a long letter but the gist is that the police were no help at all, with the Bangkok police shuffling him off to the ones at his next stop and the police there declaring that it was none of their business. The traveller didn’t even have enough change left to make a phone call. He might still be standing out- side a phone booth in Chiang Mai, but an Israeli girl gave him enough money to call for help. att From the saine paper came a let- ter from a Thai citizen bewailing the poor standards set by many tour companies in the country.
