Son inspiration of WHEN GARET Anderson lost his job at a local engineering firm, he was at a loss over what he could do to support his family. His son Scott was born with ce- tebral palsy and became paralyzed from the neck down at age two following complications arising from surgery. “J made a self assessment and I felt that there was an opportunity in providing services to the disabl- ed and seniors with wheelchairs,’’ said Anderson. What Anderson did was to create his own company which specialized in wheelchairs. He call- ed it ‘‘Scottsdad," after his son who was the company’s inspira- Due to a lot of perseverance, Sccit now walks and is an outstanding wheelchair athlete who has won many medals in track, swimming, and weightlifting. But when he’s not competing, Scott is helping Anderson in the Scottsdad store on 15th Street in North Vancouver, selling wheelchairs and giving advice on rehabilitation support systems. One of the sivre’s current specialities is a variety of super light-weight wheel chairs, which aliow the disabled, particularly children, to move around more. The chairs are made with high qvality bearings so the person can turn and move about easier. ‘‘They allow a child, especially one with | V fi low energy, to move into a crowd and participate,” said Anderson. The chairs are made of light- weight aluminum instead of chrome and weigh between 24 to 30 pounds, compared to ordinary chairs which are double their weight, between 40 to 60 pounds. In addition, the rear wheels can be removed, which is good news to parents who have been used to lif- ting heavy chairs in and out of the car. The lighter chairs protect the mover from potential back pro- blems. The equipment is operated by a sensitive switch which can be actu- ated by the blink of an eyelid. Many people with hearing pro- blems don't need hearing aids. But only a modern hearing test like the one now being offered by Beltone can really tell for sure. Everyone should have a hear- ing test at least once a year — even people now wearing a hear- ing aid or those who have been told nothing could be done for them. Only a hearing test can determine if modern methods of hearing amplification can help them hear better.
