8 - Friday, September 2, 1988 - North Shore News MAILBOX Calli to save bus depot Dear Editor: Fred McCormack Independent Canadian Transit B.C. Transit wants to garage its President, Loca! #1 Union North Vancouver buses in Bur- naby. Transit has told us it will save $565,000 per year by the move. What BCT has not told us is that this saving also can be realized by moving the buses to its Lloyd Avenuc facility in North Van- couver, The savings come from reducing personnel, climinating operating maintenance and repair costs of the extra facility, and grants for taxes for the extra property. It is a good management decision to scrap the unneeded facility. It is a terrible community deci- sion to unnecessarily move our buses out of town. This particular- ly when the extra cost of running the whole fleet back to North Vancouver will cost $300,000 per year in the extra travel time, fuel and maintenance costs. The present Third Street garage occupies 2.7 acres holding 76 buses. Eight buses can be serviced simultaneously. The Lloyd Avenue garage occupies: 3.27 acres main- taining only 22 buses plus six spares. Six buses can be serviced simultancously but an additional bay with hoist capability is hidden under the office/lounge area in this modern medular building. Lloyd Avenue can maintain the entire North Shove fleet within one month. Even alternate office space exists above the garage. If the adjacent road allowance is developed to allow a ‘‘flow through’? parking pattern” the present Lloyd Avenue facility can garage up to 200 buses. As is, tur- ning buses within the yard, Lloyd Avenue can easily handle the entire North and West Vancouver fleets, both maintenance and storage. Buses based in Burnaby depend upon the Second Narrows Bridge to get into service. One fost load from a semi-trailer on an icy mor- ning could well result in no buses and have the whole town late for work. Isolated slowdowns will add to the uncertainty of any bus get- ting into service. Any accident, the PNE, imagine the effect of the construction of the Cassiar Cor- ridor. Our emergency response capa- bility includes using buses for mass evacuation and mass ambulance service. If the buses are out of town, it will be too late to discuss with Transit the loss of life resulting from inadequate am- bulance or evacuation capability. The time to act is now. Councils have responded angrily to Transit’s insensitivity. Sign a Save Our Buses petition to tell this callous Crown Corporation that we, the people, disagree with moving our buses out of town.
