21 - Friday, April 17, 1987 - North Shore News UP-TC-DATE LOOK Panelling rejuvenates RENOVATIONS boring WHEN A family room is deco- rated with panelling that still looks good but boring, often it is left alone ... and unused. An updating of the overlooked room can provide usable space at less cost than an addition. ‘Usually, what keeps people from redoing a room is their reluc- tance to change serviceable walls,’’ says designer Michael Cannarozzi. “With the new plywood wall panelling designs, you can have both practicality and an up-to-date look. Any room that has been panelled can be transformed with new plywood panelling.”’ Proving his point, Cannarozzi redecorated a family room that started with dark woodgrain panelling. Light real wood oak veneer panelling,: interestingly grooved every two inches, was applied as a wainscot around the room. The same panelling was used to fashion contemporary valances around the windows and to build a new snack centre. The woodgrain panelling is complemented by plywood panell- ing in a floral design. The light beige background is matched in counter stools, while the flower -colors are echoed in both French blue trim and warm peachy pinks used in the upholstery and game table chairs. “To panel over panelling, use the old panelling as a pattern for EE Boras t 4 eS laying out and cutting to size,” the designer explains. ‘‘The new panelling can be attached with either nails os panelling adhesive. Remove the b..ceboard and ceiling moldings, repa-at them to match the new scher::, and reattach them over the ne." panelling. “Working around windows and doorways is a little bit trickier, but worth it. Butt thin panelling flush to the molding, and then cover the seam with smal! molding, such as a quarter round, or lattice painted to match. “With thicker panelling, remove molding, fur out the door jamb family room with lattice, then reattach molding over the panelling and jamb. ‘Light switches and outlets can be raised to accommodate the ad- ditional thickness by adding outlet box extensions. With thinner panelling, sometimes switch and outlet covers can simply be reinstalled once the new panelling is in place.” é Another update for the tradi- tional family room is adding a snack centre that suits today’s new eating styles. This snack centre is tucked into a corner with ample space for storage.
