F'ashion New romantic hairstyles recall glamor goddess era STRONG, confident shapes softened with waves and curls form the newest direc- tions in hair design this year. By RAYMOND HENNESSEY Contributing Writer In many respects, it is a rather romantic mood in hairstyling that recalls some of the glamor goddess looks of another era. Some of the elements used to achieve the newest styles are also borrowed from the past, such as marcel wav- ing and finger waving — tech- niques that are used to add interest to more structured, textured styles. Texture surfaces quite literally in the new hair designs. But, if your hair is not naturally full-bodied and textured don’t worry. Today there is a wide range of perming techniques including those that provide a texturizing effect as op- posed to curl. Such a perm will give you the foundation required for many of the new structured shapes, as well as contribute to manageability. Being able to manage one’s hair easily is always a bonus, especially for those on the go. Your hair- dresser can be a great help and resource in advising you on the type of products or equipment that will help you maintain your look. Many styles benefit from styling aids available today, such as gels, mousses and lotions. Ask your sty- list to show you how to use such products to create different effects with your style and to explain their advantages and disadvantages. For example, lotions tend to be the mildest in strength, with gels and mousses the firmest. Ask what ef- fects are possible when these pro- ducts are applied to wet hair versus dry hair. . You should aiso be aware of the benefits of various styling tools. For example, if you blow dry your hair, there are a number of dif- ferent effects possible depending on your hair cut, the techniques used with the blow-dryer and even the type, size and shape of brush that you use as you work with the dryer. When you change your hairstyle, watch your hairdresser carefully when your hair is being dried. Don’t hesitate to ask her or him to actually show you the pro- per styling technique. Hair blowers, curling irons, and heated rollers are all traditional styling tools but some techniques such as scrunch-drying may be less familiar.
