A taped program of a show dealing with the af- fliction that attracted widespread interest on the Phil Donahue TV series will be presented at Lions Gate -Hospital at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Apnil 17. Titled ‘‘Surviving Schizophrenia’’, the pro- gram is being presented by the North Shore Friends of Schizophrenics, the local branch of the B.C. Friends of Schizophrenics which was incorporated in Vancouver last year. Everyone interested in the work of the society has been invited to attend ‘‘this first important event’’ in its ongoing attempt to educate the public about the illness. “If anyone has a specific talent,’’ says Bill Alderton, president of the North Shore group, ‘‘he or she will be especially welcomed -- but one and all will be greeted with love and hope at our door.”’ The group’s big need at the mament is for as many volunteers as possible to work with = schizophrenics under the guidance of professionals. John Pringle, founder of the Schizophrenia Fellowship of Great Britain, has stressed, however, that ‘‘professionals have something to learn about the management of schizophrenics from the best practice of competent relatives.’’ Such management, Pringle sayS, iS an art, not a science. Relatives and lay volunteers can become intuitively very ‘, vowel ~~ Se AS skilled. Research to date suggests that some 35 new schizophrenics are likely to be diagnosed each year on the North Shore, adding to some 630 long-term sufferers in the area and 1,400 North Shore residents with a risk of developing the illness over the course of a lifetime. Secretary of the B.C. chapter is Gloria Kelsey of North Vancouver, while Dr. Norma Calder of West Vancouver (922-6311) is in charge of community relations. Vice-president of the North Shore branch, work- ing with Bill Alderton, is Joan Deering of West Van. Volunteers. will be sta- tioned April 17 at the 15th Street entrance of Lions Gate Hospital to meet and greet members of the public attending the program. rapier-mache Easter Egg> Phese brightly ¢ oloured eyes from Cermany make delighttul contamners for Paster treats After baste children will love tose them as hidirypy polars es for streadl treasures We also brave brand prerbeatc Po en wenrenrarns War an opps trom Poland cdlried flowers “yprriniy bouquets ot anid our wide seleettor cf rte resthriapy baster baskets Visit Ttriprcoet tin cctart Serb) “ypou dais! & we DU Chmetarwse va ow. we oa/ Nod Aral (OO tha ft VO) SP “years bh Meal 4th Ave and Mapte Ritatlano RAL.
