WHO. KNOWS what lurks in 1 the hearts of men? e Shadow knows. But who knows what lurks in the. heart of the shadow. _By KELLEY-JO BURKE. “Night Photographs, con- taining the work of photo- graphers William Deacon and Phillip Scholtz Ritter- man, is concerned with this question. What can hide in shadow, what mysteries are there in the relationship bet- ween dark and light? Deacon’s work is called Views of Night. It is sudden dramatic material, using .a flash to get direct, black and white shots of night-scenes. Deacon has a marvellous eye for the sinister. A wooden carton, torn open at the side, an ordinary enough sight in the daylight, under Deacon’s spot flash takes on a.mystique of espionage, con- traband, Bogart lurking “in the unseen background, © waiting to unpack the -Maltese . If the lights are shut off, you can’t know what is under the table.’’ While Deacon uses more obviously spooky settings, like graveyards, it is his shots of doorways, stairs, under- passes, that create the most suspense. The predominant question is: who is about to arrive through the door, or at the top of the stair, and why is he hiding now? Deacon concentrates on sharp, theatrical lines. Ritter- man’s work, also in black and white, is on more gentle curva g lines. The light is us- behind central objects, to. vente a diffuse glow rather direct highlights. ‘| like William's work,”’ Ritterman says, ‘‘and J think it’s marvellous how different- ly we work. The everything else, people, trains, light itself, moves in a blurred, curving motion. While there may be central figures, there is rarely a definite subject to Ritter- man’s work. “*l try to create a stage set or scene into which = the viewer can incorporate himself. People tell me that my pictures make them nostalgic.”” But not always pleasantly. He points to a photograph of a train sta- tion, ‘This one reminded one man of the station where he was put On a train to go toa concentration camp.
