Al2 - Wednesday, September 1, 1982 - North Shore News FROM PAGE A1 week's resignation of Mayor Don Bell, Alderman Peter Powell and the early resignation of alderman Marilyn Baker so she can run for the mayor's chair. Alderman Jim Ball said he has not decided whether to choose between running again as alderman or ‘con- testing Baker’s bid for mayor. Speculation in local political circles is that Ball would rather not run against Baker - who has age and moderate image on her side and is. being heavily promoted by Don Bell while another community heavy- weight, Derek Inman, is to work as her campaign manager. However, he may be under pressure to run from TAGG as the group grasps at the idea of electing a redneck mayor. Careful, Jim. Ball had told the News when earlier asked about TAGG: “I have heard rumors but I haven't been Officially approached up to this point. I would prefer we didn’t have to have any organized backing but it may be necessary. I will have to look at it as time runs along.” “If NoVVA is going to be actively campaigning for a left-of-centre group then those of us who consider ourselves right-of-centre may have a battle on our hands. | think the voters of North Vancouver Djistrict are predominantly right-of- centre.” Ball predicted we may well be on the threshold of the end of independent politics at a municipal level in North Vancouver. He said the same thing may be in store at Richmond = and Surrey. Perhaps Socred backers are organizing TAGG teams there, too. Meanwhile, the letter and form sent to us by Douglas V. Vincent (taxpayer) makes it’ clear that in North Vancouver at least, TAGG has evolved far beyond the stage of being an idea. The form also TAGG will be candidates for the school board, where NoVVA currenly enjoys exclusive control. What could sound more innocuous than names like North Vancouver Voters’ Association, or Taxpayers’ Association for Good Government? Or even the Concerned Citizens’ Association? Whatever happened to the CCA anyway, after they got wiped out by NoVVA in the school board elections on the issue of spending restraints? We haven't heard anything from them for ages. Mrs. Arlene Bell, the CCA member who took the school board to court on the community schools issue doesn’t even want to discuss it. Hey, maybe the CCA all jointed TAGG! The philosophies jive together - heavy on the issue of spending, with lots of mention of the word “tax- payer.” Douglas V. Vincent (taxpayer) defends Lakes, the most negative influence on District council, as being “all alone in his efforts to keep our taxed dollars from disappearing into the hungry maw of the current school board and council, never to be seen again.” ™ The TAGG form he encloses lists a five-point TAGG Philosophy, something like a mini- constitution. All very general stuff about freedom of worship and speech, etc., upholding the law and having elected represen- tatives make “intelligent decisions.” Not the kind of thing that would upset anybody or which deals with FIRST AID TIP CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING @ the casualty May be found con tus wh stupor of unconscious @ Before antering a gas tilled roam breathe «| and Out several times take os dee, Deeath then hold at Oor t trem cormne a casaalty as well getiin sod out otf the room quickty @ Be Case carbo Mmonoaide as hghter that at meee oc tase oto) floor level whet omideres jo toe yg tea tera Mh Ne ( asually @ Turn otf the source Of danger open WHAoOws, ab doors Men remove the Pasay aac kly os possible @ Start artificial tesporation inmediately if Draathing os fading of “as stopped @ When bresthing returns to normal Place Me casualty On his side with Head tae & to. Only hint of the politics behind TAGG is in article two of the philosophy. Whereas Douglas V. Vin- cent (taxpayer) takes ex- ception to us having referred to TAGG players as rabid free-enterprizers, that second paragraph is straight from chapter one of the free enterprize bible: “All individuals have the right to own _ private property and enjoy the fruits of their own labour.” It seems extremely doubtful that TAGG is any more middle-of-the-road _than NoVVA. The only difference is that NoVVA has officially declared it will be running candidates and given its stand on a list of controversial local matters. So why all the secrecy from TAGG? Continued vagueness can only serve to create suspicion. It is unlikely that such a polarization in municipal politics will accomplish anything for the residents of North Vancouver District, whether it’s TAGG or NoVVA who win the most seats. But let’s at least know who we're being asked to support and vote for and which flag they're running under - as well as just what those flags stand for. Nobody much likes the prospect of being duped so that a minority interest group can gain a position of power by being elected as something it is not. BALL... TAGGed to run as redneck mayor?
