SOLAR FIREPOWER: This unplanned
demonstration of solar énergy turned out to be a little
too hot to handle. . —

Robyn Boyer, who was campus coordinator for Pro-
ject Sun Day at the University of Calffornia’s Irvine
Campus, had taken a three-foot aluminum dish, used
to focus the sun’s rays, to a TV studio to show how
solar power works. Afterwards, she left the solar ap-
paratus in the back of her car in a parking lot.

It was overcast when she walked away from her car,
but soon after, the sun broke through the clouds. It hit
the aluminum dish and the sun’s rays were focused -
right on to the car's fabric headliner. By the time Ms.
Boyer returned, she found the car surrounded by
