7 - Sunday, February 26, 1989 - Lynn Valley Echo Local woman gears up for role in opera THE WHIRLWIND life of Rosemary Courquin is enough to exhaust anyone listening to her talk ‘about it. The Lynn Valley resident of some 14 years and mother of two is preparing to perform in her first principal role with the North Shore Light Opera Society (NSLO). She'll be playing Isabel, one of General Stanley’s daughters in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, which is opening March 3 at the Centennial Theatre. The energetic 35-year-old manages to fit three opera rehear- sals a week around her regular schedule, which includes fitness and jazz dancing classes, teaching yoga, running, modelling her long, curly hair and being é a “‘full-time’’ Courquin came to Canada from Fiji with her family in 1972. She married a Canadian and is raising two daughters, ages four and 10. Although Courquin sang in choirs and acted a little when she was in school, her arrival in the performing world was accidental. In 1984 she was spotted in a jazz dance class in West Vancouver by the NSLO’s director, who was looking for more black extras for the production of Showboat. The N©.0's beginnings go back to 1943, with the formation of a greup called Le Cantore D'Opera, waich was to be an outlet for ?mateur musical performers. Their initial productions, I Pagliacci and Calaveria Rusticana, were followed annually by a musical offering. The Pirates of Penzance is directed by North Shore actress/ director Joan Harris, with musical direction by Richard Williams and choreography by Doreen Marlor. The show will be playing March 3 and 4, 9 to 11 and 16 to 18 at 8 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on March 12. She has been singing in the chorus ever since as well as serving as the NSLO's publicity director for the past two years. Courquin has also branched out with the role of the flirtatious Spanish waitress in Deep Cove Stage’s Surprise Package and an appearance in Sydney Poitier’s movie, Shoot to Kill, filmed in Vancouver last year. Courquin’s main love is still the NSLO, which is made up of 35 multi-talented local people who all like to sing. According to her, a love of music and willingness to work, rather than a formal music background, are the prerequisites for becoming involved. -— .
