& - Wednesday, CI ot 993 - North Shore News Who benefits from hemp ban? Dear Editor: Much has been said and written about ‘the efforts to save our Clayoquot rain forest, and t especially liked Paul Hundal's letter of Sept. 15 about the good behavior of the Peace Camp pro- testers versus the hooliganism of the loggers group. But there may be another possi- bility for saving our B.C. forests. The Emperor Wears No Clothes, by Jack Herer, reveals that one acre of hemp can pro- duce four times as much paper as an acre of average pulp forest, and it can do it in one growing season! Furthermore, hemp paper is dioxin-free, as hydrogen peroxide replaces the toxic chlorine bleach used jn the wood-paper process. This paper has a life span of hundreds of years, compared with only 25-80 years for wood paper, ERCP rT SPAT ET arbage writing’ promotes racism Dear Editor: In response to Doug Col- lins’ editorial on Sept. 29, | am disgusted. By writing this he is using the so-called ‘‘freedom of speech” too far. We should educate people like Collins and inform them that immigrants to Canada bring skills that are needed. Canadian government doesn't just allow anybody to reside in Canada. Over and over again, Col- lins, who seems to be very racist, writes prejudiced edi- torials. The North Shore News should be ashamed of allow- ing him to write this filth. * Write editorials that will solve the problems our society is dealing with today. By writing like Doug one pro- motes racism and violence. 1 say North Shore News should get rid of Collins once and Sor ever. If you won't deal with his garbage writing, the people will rise up and act against him. : David Robertson West Vancouver 6 H ENGLISH | AT SYLVAN ® Self paced, independent learning * Multimedia computer teaching system ° Practice speaking in privacy ® Learn at own pace * Students of all ages he SYLVAN LEARNING * CENTRE* NORTH SHORE 985-68] 1 and it can be recycled seven times, unlike wood paper's three times. Hemp paper isn't new; it’s been used for thousands of years, Ac- cording to Herer, 75% to 90% of the world’s paper manufactured before 1883 was made from can- nabis hemp, including the Gutenberg Bible and the first two drafts of the American Declara- tion of Independence. The part of the plant used for paper is the hurd, the fragments of dried stalk that remain after the fibre strands are removed. The fibre of hemp can also pro- duce a cloth that is stronger, softer, and warmer than cotton, and can furthermore be grown without the vast amounts of pesticides used on cotton. (According to Herer, the cotton industry is responsible for 50% of the pesticides used in agriculture today.) WV take a Dear Editor: How is it possible that one of Canada’s most affluent municipalities (West Vancouver) can bungle up almost every major development? . Allow architects to create. a penitentiary, and cal! it a library; contractors to build a 100-foot long retaining wall without ap- proval; developers to construct two massive highrises (‘Westroyal) when 51% of the voters said no; and allow disgraceful development of the Caulfeild . Plateau with housing packed. onto clearcut mountain slopes producing the By banning hemp, we are also, according to Herer, banning a valuable medicine for the treat- ment of glaucoma, asthma, epilepsy, tumors, and imany other conditions. This fast-growing and versatile plant is also a source of biomass that when converted to charcoal and non-sulphur fuel oil, could help break North America’s dependence on foreign oil, and considerably reduce the amount of harmful emissions that plague our atmosphere. It's also a rich source of cellulose for the manufacture of plastic, building materials, and more. We have to ask ourselves who is benefitting from the banning of hemp, and why information like this isn’t more widely known, Victoria Hogan North Vancouver closer look biggest the North Shore. What they most urgently require is a qualified architectural planner with powers to stop any further rape of our last tree-covered lands, and to take a closer look at all public buildings before any further disasters can occur like the new library. Let us have the Parks & Rec department beautify the Taylor Way/Clyde Avenue lands before the planners approve any further “Faulty Towers!” Stan Ward West Vancouver eyesore on Offence best form of defence? Dear Editor: in Paul St. Pierre’s article sup- porting the abhorrent practice of hunting, his accusation that people who oppose hunting but still eat meat are hypocrites is the tirade of a desperate man in a morally in- defensible position. But offence is the best form of defence — right, Paul? Harvesting an animal raised for food is not the same as killing a defenceless wild animal for sport. Hunters hunt for the thrill of the kill. { can visualize St. Pierre now. Breathless, flushed and trembling with excitement as his quarry falls from the sky. Paul, was it as good for you as it was for that poor bird? J.L.
