The letter stated that dis- trict council decided on June 2 to support the provincial gov- ernment in their default plan — mainly to rehabilitate Lions ‘brid jin the yap Gate bridge by widening the three lanes and building sepa- rated sidewalks at the province’s budgeted $70 mil- lion. Bell also said his council opposed any “additional finan- cial burden including tolls.” Coun. Darreli Mussatto and Mayor Jack Loucks were alone in agreeing with North Vancouver District’s position. “I think the three North Shore councils should stick together,” Loucks said. Mussatto said the default plan is a good idea. “The expanded capacity of single occupancy vehicles (on Lions Gate} is going to impact us,” he said. “The North Shore doesn’t want any more growth anyway.” Many councillors were skeptical of the provincial gov- ernment’s plan for Lions Gate to begin with. The group has met only once. The minister has said that if the group don’t come to agreement the defaule plan will be implemented. Coun. Barbara Perrault didn’t say whether she was tor or against the default pian but said she wasn’t “dancing to the district’s rune.” Perrault read parts of a let- ter written by North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Kacherine Whittred, and signed by all three other North Shore MLAs, to North Vancouver District council. It states: “You (Bell) have gone on record as sccepung the $70 millon offered by the government to refurbish the =a SPACES STIL Aug. 11-15 bridge.
