Construction began on the project earlier in February. The Summerhill project is managed by the Chartwell Care Corporation and offers corner suites with panoramic views of the North Shoze. The Summerhill marks the first venture in British Columbia for Chartwell, which already has its hand in a number of retirement com- plexes in southern Ontario. Chartwell is currently eyeing more sites in the province to establish other such complexes. Chartwell held a ceremo- ny to mark the beginning of. the tower’s ground floor on July 6. North Vancouver City Mayor Barbara Sharp and councillor Barbara Perrault were in attendance. All the studio, one- and two-bedroom units in the Summerhill are rentals, which Summerhill spokesperson Ann-Margaret Tait believes offers seniors more financial flexibility. “We think it works better for the older group (of the elderly population),” said Tait. “Maybe people in their 60s and 70s don’t mind buy- ing another home but to purchase something in your 80s is a big stretch in your capital and it takes away your flexibility in case anything happens to your health. It’s just not something that a lot of seniors want to do. They would prefer to have the flexibility of renting.” Suites at the Summerhill — which range from 442 sq. ft to 774 sq. ft. — start at $2,200 a month and rise with the floor levei. The higher the suite, the higher the price. Although Chartwell has only recently begun market- ing the complex to seniors, Tait said it now has five con- firmed tenants and over 70 calls from other interested seniors.
