4% — Weunesday, April 14, 1999 — North Shore News Dear Editor: British Columbia's Human Rights Code is the niost infamous attack on free- dom of speech this province has ever seen, That is why I have iaunched an appeal which, I feel certain, will make that code null and void. If Lam wrong about that, anyone who annoys speciai interest groups like B'Nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress will be at risk, not to mention being a target for our atrocious NDP government. Strangely enough, most of the mainstream media in Vancouver are on the side of the censors. They pay lip service to freedom of the press while heaving sighs and saying that some people (like me) are really beyond the pale. Thus the Vancouver Sun, in reporting my appeal, was careful to state that the Canadian Free = Speech League, which is supporting me, is “a group described as harbouring white suprema- cists and Holocaust deniers.” Deseribed by — whom? B’Nai Brith, the CJC, and Harry Abrams, no doubt, whose complaint led to the second tribunal, which found against me and the News. Anyone who wants to see what constitutes “hate” in the minds of our censors would do well to get my recently published book, Here We Go Again!, which contains the offending columns and many others. If I say so myself, nothing shows more clearly what inspires our anti-free speech artists in B.C. The book is available for $18.95, and can be ordered through P.O. Box 19831, West Vancouver, B.C. Doug Collins West Vancouver north shore news MAIL Box Collins’ book holds WV ex-mayor tackled on transit columns that ‘hate’ Dear Editor: I am writing to comment on Derrick Humphreys’ April 2 letter to the editor regard- ing the West Vancouver Blue Bus system. How can Mr. Humphreys suggest that the melding of the two transit systems on the North Shore to provide direct routing from West Vancouver to the Lions Gate Hospizal rot be different for the pre- sent systems and their tree- dom of interchange? Many of my neighbours are senior citizens, and all I've talked to prefer not to have to ride three buses to reach such North Vancouver destinations as Lions Gate Hospital, a trip that takes as long as 1% hours by transit, because of indirect routing and missed connec- tions, as opposed to 20 min- utes by car from West Vancouver, For the same rea- son, I do not take the bus to work, Transit is there to serve the interests of the travelling pub- lic, not the self-serving inver- ests of Derrick Humphreys’ political carcer, which appears to include stifling progress, growth and efficiency on the GVTA, as well as disregard for the environment. The majoricy of taxpayers want a safe, convenient and cost-effective transportation system that is user-friendly. ] am not advocating either one or two transit authorities on the North Shore, but integra- tion of the existing two to increase one-bus direct service between municipalities along with = passenger safety. Overcrowding and fare eva- sion (and transit personnel who allow the cheats to get away with it) are more press- ing issues on transit that need to be dealt with. May | ask how you now get around, Mr. Humphreys? You have r-dden on my Blue Bus only once, and that was over two years ago. Also, I r. zret having cast a vote your way, even if you declare that we Blue Bus drivers are the best in existence.
