Ranjit Gill, 27, fell about 73 fect along a steep cmbankunent after she strayed from a tril in the rugged terrain of the North Vancouver park. Gill was one of three women on a hiking excursion along the Perimeter Trail which originates at the Deep Cove lookout along Mount Seymour Road and leads north to Goldie Lake. About 20 minutes into their hike the trio heard the sound of running water. According to North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Const. Tom Seaman, the women’s curiosity got the better of them and Gill left the trail to investigate the water’s where- abouts. A short time later she disappeared from her compan- - ions? view, While one of the women remained at the scene, a third ran for help. As she reached the Deep Cove lookout, she ran - into a tio of tourists from London who had parked their camper van in the area. “She was a bit worried,” “recalled. Although = the — mishap occurred shortly after 7 p.m., North Shore Rescue personnel weren't notiied for more than an hour — time thar would later prove to be crucial. As North Shore Rescue crews, which hiked to the site of the mishap, worked ta set up generators near the trail the trie had earlier wavelled, Gill's two companions sat huddled in the darkness — shifting from shiver- ing to weeping and back again. Meanwhile their fallen friend received emergency aid from rescue personnel who had to seale down the face of the cliff above her.. A helicopter was summoned to the area arrived shorty after 10 p.m., but was unable to assist in the rescue because of quickly fading light.
