| Week honors ‘unsung heroes . . COMMUNITIES across Canada are now celebrat- ing National Volunteer Week 1998. This special week, until Saturday, is set aside to thank and - honor the people w! ho donate time and cnergy to their fellow cit- izens and to causes they believe in. The week is also meant to increase public awareness of the vital contribution that volunteers (33 million of them!) make to our communities and to Canadian ~ socicty as a whole. For the fifth year in a row, North Shore Community Services “sponsored the “Name Somcone Whose Heart is in the Right *. Place” campaign. Over the past few weeks, organizations and indi- ‘viduals have been nominating volunteers who they think provide good examples of voluntecring. From those nominated a com- mittee, chosen by the NSCS board, selected six typical volunteers from across the North Shore. Those six were honored.at a recep- q © tion on Tuesday. They are: Sharon Johnston, who volunteers in +’ Lions Gate Hospital’s Palliative Care unit through Family Services ° .of the North Shore; Joyce Hibberd, a volunteer with the Breast “". Self Examination committee of the Canadian Cancer Society; Bev Aveling, a voluntecr with North Shore Crisis Services, which runs ‘Emily “Murphy ‘House; Bob Paxton, who volunteers with Canadian Mental Health; Elko B. Kroon, a volunteer at Silver Harbour. Centre; and Jill Hanney, a volunteer with Neighbour - Link, an inter-denominational church organization. www.dnviorg. More than 150 District residents serve on @ e-variety of advisory committees and task forces. These volunteers -- your friends and neighbours -- play a key role in the municipality’ framework for public involvement, providing important information and advice to Council.
