The goal is to cultivate world-class music lovers rather than
world-class musicians. “T want these kids to grow up and
become patrons — of the theatre, the opera, the symphony,”
says Macanlay.

youngsters perform: jazz, swing, Canadian compoyers and
African hymn songs.

Macaulay pushes the boundaries to keep it fresh,

In a performance last Sunday at Centennial ‘Theatre the
band’s young musicians, aged 10 to 19, tackled Puccint and
Wagner for “A Night at the Opera.”

May 9 the band will present its third annuai Big Band
Cabaret at the Squamish Nation recreation centre, tradition-
ally a sellout and the band’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

“The band runs because of the parents,” says. Macaulay.
“This is a family-driven organization which is what makes it
great.”

In fact, it is nor uncommon for fathers and sons, sisters and
brothers to carry on the family tradition of playing in the
band.

The youth band is accepting enrolment for the °98/°99 season.
