22 — Friday, October 30, 1997 — North Shore News The Vancouver International Film festival Fiu keeps star away from film festivities N Saturday night, the Vancouver International Film Festival Anniversary Gala was held at the Hotel Vancouver. A screening of the Canadian/Bntish production Love and Death an Long Island started off the night’s testiviries. In attendance were the film’s stars, John Hurt, Jason Priesdey and Fiona Loewi, director Richard Kwietniowski, and producers Christopher Zimmer and Steve Clark-Hall. Unfortunately, Jason Priestley made only a brief appear- ance at the screening, beelining for the exit, unable to attend the party due to the “flu.” We missed John Hurt too. In finding out it was non- smoking event, I’m sure the Irish actor wasn’t about to kick his habit to please our sensibil- ities. We did hang out in the men’s wash- toom though, hoping to run into him when he dis- covered that it had turned into “the smoking room.” No John Hurt, but we were not lacking in compa- ny as we made the acquaintance of other filmmakers. After being polite- ly asked to feave by hotel security we plunged back into the crowd of 400 or so to con- tinue our original quest — to seck and find celebri- ties. During the last evo weeks of premieres and parties I talked to most of the North Shore contingent at the film fest: director Mark Tuit from Barnone, actors Laura Harris, Tygh Runyan and James McBurney from Kitchen Party, actors Todd McGillivray and Donny McWilliams of Kenneth Sherman’s The Time Being; and Melanie Friesen, producer of the festival’s Film and TV Trade Forum.
