Dr. G: Heartworm is a disease of dogs in which large worms fill tne- ‘heart chambers. In the tuture, heart- worm is expected to become a major concern to dog owners in the Vancouver area because it seems io be spreading. The Okanagan, Ontario, Manitoba and the U.S already have a serious heartworm problem. Though tecog- nized in the Okanagan in 1991, the experts tell us that the parasite will continue to spread to the Lower Mainland by an infected dog. The dis- B ease will then enter the local mosqui- to population, which will act as the sources of infection for our dogs. Heartworm has already been diag- nosed in dogs in our area but these - pets had travelled to heartworm: ot Tea Max Shepherd/Husky _ neutered, 15 mos DORIS ORR - infested areas. To date, we have not discovered a dog that has been infacted locally so we hopa focal mos- quitoes are free of heartworm at this time. : Heartworm is very difficult to treat. Luckily, it is easily proventad by giving monthly tablets, which are adminis- teved from July to Decernbar. Before starting on preventative medication, . pets must have their blood tested for the presence of heartworm. This test is then repeated. Q: My cat vomits about twice cach wook. Is there z way to stop it? Dr. J: It really depends on why your cat Is vomiting. Some cats simply have hairbatls, When thoy lick them- selves, hair accumulates in the stom- ach. Hairbalis are particularly com- mon in long-haired cats. Though they can be helped with rigorous brushing and periodic laxatives, the problem is Flossy Boston Terrier Spayed . Depending on the severl- ty, this disease can cause intermittent . of frequent: vomiting, diarrhea, or a combination of both. It should be sus- pected In a cat that suddenly starts vomiting or if a regular vomiting pat- tern gets worse. Medication can help -but diet is also important in managing. ; this condition.
