At the same time council proceeded with approval of
the 80-lot British Pacific Properties (BPP) Canterbury
. Subdivision, on which the dam is located, The approval
comes with a provision that BPP will pay $25,000
toward either the cost of removing or restoring the dam.

BPP is dedicating the dam to the municipality us a
park.

The dam, located on Lawson Creek, was built by
Bob and Ross Shields of Vedder River Shingle Co. in
1917 for their cedar shingle operation in the Inglewood
School area. After the logs in the area were felled and
hauled by horse or donkey engine to the dam, workers
used the water to send the bolts down a two-mile flume
toa mill. . :

Later, subsistence logging operations continued to
use the flume or the right. of way to transport wood
down to the lower levels.

According to Hugh Johnson, who has been working
to develop forestry history walks in the area, riding a
plank down the flume was a form of childhood enter-
tainment that kinded at Jeast one child in hospital with

Johnson was encouraged by council's decision, espe-
cially after earlier studies determined that restoration to
make the dam safe during floods could cost up to
$200,000 and ruin the structure's heritage value.

“It would be better to take some pictures and puil the
thing down,” he told the News.

Johnson is pretty sure, however, that smaller more
affordable modifications could be made to the dam to
make it safe.

The $6,000 study will allow West Vancouver to
analyse the hazard more closely.
