Saturday-Sunday March 25th-26th Or Wer Layne Christensen News Reporter BILL Coughlan thinks the city’s parking enforcement officers could be more charita- ble towards vistors to Lions Gate .fospital. “Theyre awfully anxious to issue othe tickets,” said Covehlan, a West Vancouver s aor, whose wife, Joan, isa resident of Evergreen House. Coughlan visits daity with his wife, a resident of the leng- terms care facility: for 14 months. “Pye never missed a day. Im there for two to three, maybe four hours, seven days a week.” said Coughlan. While he’s there he visits with other residents and helps with feeding. He's not alone. There are seven seniors him who help out at ‘Ty South, his wite’s ward. As many as two dozen assist in the building, said Coughlan. The problem is, street parking in the area is limited to two hours, Parking in the hospital’s parkade is $1.50 an hour to a maximum of $9 a day. Seniors can buy a 14-day, 24-hour pass for $35. But that’s stall, expensive for Coughlan and other seniors on fixed incomes who routine- ly visit residents of the facility. Coughlan‘s suggestion is to designate parking for “vol- unteers only” on a section of unteers the street nearby. But city clerk Bruce Hawkshaw. said that’s just not possible. “Hospital parking is at an incredible premium,” be said. The cuy has struck a parking study task force. Parking con- gestion near Lrons Gate is one of the isstics being reviewed. Results of the study won't be made available any time soon. Lions Gate Hospital spokesman Clay Adams. said the hospinal’s 300 55 400 “official” volunteers receive fice parking on a validated stamp system. But those vol- unteers are under the auspices of the Auxiliary to Lions Gate Hospital. Judy Snowden, president of the auxiliary, said that the services provided by Coughlan and other visitors to Evergreen area’e part af the program. The auxiliary's volunteers at Evergreen are assigned one wo-hour shift a - week, said Snowden, and assist with feedings and birth- day parties. For that they receive (ree parking. But that doesn’t help Coughlan, who visits the facil- ity daily and remains can- cerned about the cost of park- ing for seniors like himself. “E was coming out of the building last Sunday afternoon and met a lady who was just in tears,” he said. “She had received two tickets in’ one week and they are $15 each. She’s a senior person and can’t atford to pay these.” West Van cop hurt in struggle with suspect A West Vancouver Police officer was sent to Lions Gate Hospital recently after an altercation with a suspect in Horseshoe Bay.
