e What do all the leiters & numbers
mean on motor oil and how offen
should | change my oil?

o Motor oils come in a variety of
@ coded formulas. All motor oil is
defined by the SAE grade. SAE is
the Society of Automotive Engineers, an
organization that tests & sets standards for
a wide assoriment of automobile parts &
supplies.

The majority of today’s motor oils are what is referred to as
mulii-grade. This is shown as a number with the letter ‘W’ then
another number such as SAE 10W'30. In simple terms, multi-
grade oils have different viscosities or thickness at different
operating temperatures. The first number, 10 in this case, is the
oil's flow rate when cold and 30 is the flow rate when hot or
when the engine is at normal operating temperature. The lower
the number, the mere easily the oil flows; hence, 5W30 flows
better than 10W40. The ‘W’ stands for winter. High perfor-
mance & racing engines as well as engines operated in very
hot environments tend to use higher graded oils,

Engine oil should be changed every three months or 5,000 km
at the very jeast. Many people prefer fo change the oil closer to
every 3,000 km: On'my race’ engine, | change it after every
race, Oil does not necessarily wear out, but it collects dirt &
carbon deposits which ore a major cause of engine wear.

Always, always change your filter at the same time you change
your oil,

For the record, | always recommend synthatic oils for my cus-
tomers, The superier lubrication offers better performance, bet-
ter fuel economy & reduced wear,
