with most power-operated tops,
the driver must get out of the car
to put this top down and up.

A standard five-speed transmis-
sion or optional four-speed
automatic are available. For spor-
ty driving, 1 recommend the man-
ual transmission. For relaxed city
and highway driving, the
automatic transmission is a much
better choice. The latter is design-
ed to shift up gears at every op-
portunity to save fuel, so the
engine spends most of its time
below 2,000 rpm. At 100 km/h in
fourth gear, the engine is barely
turning over 1,600 rpm.

The Camaro convertible is a
four-seater, though the rear seats
are rather uncomfortable and of-
fer minimal legroom. The front
seats, however, offer good sup-
port and are fully reclining. My
test car had an optional six-way
electronically operated driver’s
seat with a height adjustment.

A full set of yellow-on-black
analogue instruments is standard

equipment, as is power-assisted
steering, a tilt steering wheel and a
driver’s-side airbag. Most
power-operated conveniences are
available, such as power windows,
door locks, and mirrors. The cen-
tral locking system can only be
locked from the inside and not
from the outside with a key, a
fact that [ found annoying.

The convertible Camaro’s trunk
is quite small, as most of the
space is used up by the convertible
top. However, with the top up,
there is some extra space behind
the folding rear seat. A luggage
rack on the trunk lid would prob-
ably be a good idea.

Camaros have traditionally been
a popular target for thieves. To
help prevent this, General Motors
introduced a pass-key in 1989 and
claims thefts of Camaros have
dropped by almost 50%. The
pass-key system is an ignition key
encoded with a special metal chip.

If a duplicate key is used, or the.

ignition switch is tampered with,
the car will not start.
