Designed specifically for small business owners and manag- ers, the program has already helped more than 120 North Shore businesses to achieve increased profits. The 10-month long North Shore Community Business Development program (CBD) is geared towards increasing management skills, sales and profits. Participants take part in monthly workshops on a wide range of business topics which are conducted by profes- sionals in their fields. Following each workshop, an CBD advisor meets separtely with each participating business for an “on-site’* business counselling session. “These monthly sessions focus on practical solutions -to the reat problems and opportunities of the individual businesses.”’ said North Shore CBD program advisor Barry Goodwin. To participate in the program, au applicant must be either an owner Or manager of a small business in North Vancouver or West Vancouver. The CBD pro- gram is limited to 30 non- competing businesses, and a sub- sidy of up to 60 per cent may be made available from the local Canada Employment and Im- migration Centre. WV FIRM PROMOTED B.C. telecommunications and computer technology companies, including one from West Van- couver, were recently assisted by the provincial government at the German trade show CeBit '91 to help promote their products. West Vancouver-Howe Sound MLA John Reynoids said repre- sentatives from the international business and immigration ministry and the B.C. Trade Development Corp, joined a total of 10 B.C, firms at the trade show, held earlier this month, West Vancouver-based Resort Systems Inc. was one of the com- panies that took part in the trade show, which attracted more than 500.000 visitors from 100 coun- tries. “British Columbia's presence at the show recognizes the impor- tance of the European Community as a market for our high techno- logy products and services and as a@ source of business investment and partnership,” said B.C. Fi- nance Minister and international Business Minister Elwood Veitch, chairman of B.C. Trade. B.C. Trade, which bad two rep- resentatives at the show, distributed a brochure in’ English and German to promote B.C."s high tech industry and the exhib- iting companies. Other B.C. firms that attended the urade show were Sonatel Telecommunications Corp., CICON Research and Develop- ment Lid., and Microplex Systems Ltd., all of Vancouver; Alpha Technologies Ltd.. B.C. EXPENSIVE GOLF ACCORDING TO a list published in Business in Vancouver (BIV), West Vancouver's Capilano Golf and Country Club is the second of the 15 most expensive 18-hole golf courses 10 play in the Lower Mainland. According to BIV, the initiation fee to join the golf club is $35,000, although that figure was not confirmed by the club. The club is currently closed to memberships. North Vancouver's Seymour Golf and Country Club was rank- cd as the eighth expensive golf course to play with initiation fees of $16,000 for men and $8,000 for women. There is a four~ year waiting list for joining the club. The BIV stats were compiled by interviews with the managers or representatives of the individual clubs. POWER SUCCESS ONE OF North America’s most progressive energy conservation programs, B.C. Hydro’s Power Smart campaign, recently began its second year of operations. It’s already achieved an annual energy savings of 280 million kilowatt hours, which is enough to power 28,000 new B.C. homes. Regionally, the savings are estimated to be 33 per cent for the Lower Mainland, 11 per cent for Vancouver Island, 12 per cent for the southcrn Interior, 14 per cent for the northern region and 30 per cent for Hydro’s major industrial customers. “Power Smart is the most significant energy efficiency pro- gram in the history of Hydro and is viewed throughout the utility industry as one of the most pro- gressive on the continent,” said Eric Williams, Hydro’s Lower Mainland marketing manager. By the year 2010, Power Smart hopes to provide an annual sav- ings of 5,600 million kilowatt hours, enough power for 560,000 new B.C. homes. The campaign is advertised in more than 20 lan- guages.
