4- Friday, May 11, 1990 - North Shore News CAPILANO ELEMENTARY Schoo! kindergarten pupil Kathryn creeps out onto the street at the intersec- tion of 22nd and Bridgeman. Neighborhood residents want stop signs and crosswalks installed in the area to prevent a possible tragedy. NEWS photo Terry Peters: Pemberton Heights residents push for stop signs, crosswalks PEMBERTON HEIGHTS will be a safer place for children and seniors if North Vancouver District traffic officials install the stop signs and crosswalks resi- dents are demanding, Capilano Elementary School vice-principal Blair Martin said recently. By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer And members of the Capilano School Safety Committee, who circulated a petition last week asking for increased safety features, have been compiling the results of that petition in preparation for yet another con- frontation with district hall. The committee wants four-way stops installed on 22nd Street at both Bridgeman and Lloyd Avenues, and three-way stops in- stalled on West Keith Road at both Bridgeman and Pemberton Avenues. “We believe the additional stop signs at these intersections will help minimize potentially hazardous situations due to poor visibility, frequent pedestrian traffic — especially children and seniors -—- and increased vehicular traffic largely due to Ow se 2 0 COUPON 4 - DINING IN 20% off iood bill with out-f-neighborhood traffic us- ing Pemberton Heights as a ‘short cut’ between Marine Drive and the (Upper Leveis) high- way,’ the committee wrote in its letter to residents. Martin, who chairs the com- mittee, told the News that district officials surveyed the traffic on 22nd Street last Jan. 31, a school day, and found that 153 cars us- ed the road between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. “They said this was not high enough a volume to warrant signs,” Martin said. ‘‘But they didn’t survey the speed at which the cars were travelling.’’ Martin pointed out that ‘‘both 22nd and Keith are four or five blocks long with no restrictions. There’s nothing to impair speed. There are also visibility com- plications at 22nd and Keith, because drivers have to clear the rise before they can see any- thing.” Martin also criticized district bylaw enforcement staff for not cracking down on the owner of a truck who always parks illegally on the northeast corner of 22nd and Lloyd. Martin said more drivers than ever are detouring through the Pemberton Heights area in order to avoid the highway construc- tion at Westview and Lonsdale intersections. “A number of close calls have been reported,’’ Martin said, re- ferring especially to 22nd, which he said many Capilano school children must cross in order to walk to and from school. Norm Nikkel, supervisor of traffic operations in the district’s engineering department, told the News he wasn’t aware that a petition was being circulated. But he confirmed that his staff had done the study on 22nd Street and said they would do another if residents continued to express concern. Nikkel toid the News that crosswalks increased the risk of accidents because they gave pe- destrians a false sense of security. ‘Many studies in North America confirm that marked crosswalks have a considerably higher accident record than un- marked intersections because most children and adults don’t use as much caution when using a marked crosswalk,’’ Nikkel said. Persons with questions or comments about safety in the area are urged to call 986-3411. Sports medical clinic considered A SPORTS medicine clinic may eventually be added to the new $3.4 million sportsplex being built on the Capilano College campus, the News has learned. By PATRICK REYNARD News Reporter Alan Smith, director of planning for the college, said ‘‘there has been talk between the medical community on the North Shore and some people inside the col- lege.”’ But he stressed that only the idea is being discussed at this point. “sy depends on funding, of course, but the sportsplex will be an important facility for the North Shore, so it makes sense to have a sports medicine clinic here,’’ Smith said. Smith's comments foliow the awarding of a foundations permit and the beginning of excavations three weeks ago for the facility, plans for which have had to be scaled down considerably due to a shortfall in expected donations. for college Two squash courts, two rac- quetball courts and an outdoor deck have been removed from the original plan. The facility will now be one storey instead of two, and the total floor area has been reduced from 32,864 sq. ft. to 28,215 sq. ft. The changing rooms, a lounge, a kitchen and offices will also have to be relocated. The changes reflect a reduction of the project cost from the $3.9 million estimated in May 1986 to the $3.4 million that had been assembled by the end of last March. Still, Smith said, the complex will be ‘‘the largest facility for floor-based sports on the No;zth Shore, in terms of seating and total size. **We plan to get seating for up to 2,000 people in a separate con- tract.”” The North Shore Sportsplex, as it will be called, is scheduled to be completed by March or April of next year, Smith said, and “‘it could be as early as February.”’ ENRICH YOUR FAMILY LIFE Host an overseas student.
